I thought I would post a couple of “techniques” I use in game development (these are not really tutorials, just showing you some things that help me create a scene – for a 2D 90s style game).

For What I Heard I just rendered scenes in Blender (also did some compositing) and tried to make the models look kind of 90s, for Reprobate and Feet in The Snow I just rendered scenes in Blender again and reduced the colours, then changed the resolution for the pixelation, but no other editing was done to the images.

As for Tales From The Night Café and The Wolf in The Story I rendered scenes and stylized them with photoshop (upped the colours a lot and added some filters (sometimes layers of multiple filters to make the scenes either look a little painted or just stand out a bit) I also painted things onto the renders.

This isn’t the best painting I’ve done, but here’s an example of what I mean:

I rendered a scene in Blender with two tables and lamps (I painted the third one in).

I paint with a Huion Kamvas 13 in Photoshop, I use a combo of Jazza’s Digital Brushes and the Blending tool.

For people I either use a 3D model, paint them or modify photos (or even combine with 3D models). I’ll show an example using stock images (just make sure you use images that are allowed to be used in a project, especially if you’re selling your game, and are allowed to be modified – make sure you check the licensing):

You could also use the image you make as a reference for painting a character, or you could paint things onto that image to modify it further – but like I said, make sure you’re allowed to use and modify the image first.

This isn’t the last post I’ll make on here, but a lot of posts like this I think I’ll be posting on Patreon for a bit.
